Assessment week and homework

Well done to all of the children for their hard work during the assessments this week. We are really pleased with what we have seen so far and their fantastic attitude.
Yesterday twenty two children from Redwood went to St.Georges to bake some Victoria sponge cakes, to link to our topic. We had a great morning and were really proud of the way the children represented Crabtree.
On Friday the remaining part of Redwood and some of Teak will be doing the trip and the rest of Teak the following Tuesday. Please do not forget that the chidlren need to bring in a named tin. Why not try the recipe at home, the year 5 teachers can always be the guniea pigs!

Internet Safety for Parents

E Safety Updates

Hi All,

I hope that you are all enjoying the summer term so far.  Hopefully the sun will come out soon but at least the weather has dried up.

I wanted to write to everyone as I have received an e-safety newsletter which had some great resources mentioned for parents to support you in keeping your child safe at home on the internet.

This is an annual event, run by Childnet, for children aged 7 – 16 years with a primary or a secondary theme. This may be something that your child is interested in doing at home if they have a specific ICT interest.
Pupils will need to plan and make a short film based around the primary theme of:
The internet can make your life easier, let me show you!

Summer Term 2012, Week 2

Friday 27th April 2012

After launching our Victorian topic last Friday with our fantastic trip to The Royal Gunpowder Mills we have immersed ourselves in all things Victorian!  We have been looking at Victorian schools through Literacy, focusing on the Penny Black in art and even been looking at Victorian themed word problems in Maths.

Year 5 are really getting in to the topic and have come up with a fantastic range of things that they would like to know including finding out about: Victorian toilets, what hygiene and medicines were like in Victorian times and punishments that were given out.  They have also started doing the planning for the Year 5 teachers as they have thought about activities we could do to learn these things through.  We are very excited about some of the wonderful ideas that the children have come up with.

Next week we are going to be starting a fantastic book called Street Child by Bertie Doherty.  It's a fantastic story which also includes lots of facts about Victorians.  Have a look on our bookshelf above to find out more about it.

To get us in the mode of story writing, try this game.....

We hope that you are all having a lovely weekend and look forward to reading all about the Victorian inventions that you have been researching.

See you all in the morning

We thought that you might be interested in seeing a few more photos from our trip.
A thoroughly enjoyable day and now we can't wait to get submerged in our Victorian Topic.

Victorian Toys
We decided that when it came to Victorian children that the poor had a better deal as they were able to play with more, although as you'll see further down, they also had to work!

The Workhouse
This was an eye opener into how tough it was the workhouse.  None of us went home with a full days pay as we kept loosing pennies for spilling water, leaning on the table and talking.  Most of us could only afford some coal and stale bread by the end of the day.

The School House
This made us all appreciate how lucky we are at our school and with our lovely teachers!

Victorian Holidays
Holidays were first started during the Victorian era with 2 Holy Days (later holidays) introduced.  One at Christmas and one at Easter.  Later the banks introduced Bank Holidays too, which we still continue today.

It's not a school trip if the teachers don't end up looking silly!

Well done Year 5 on a fantastic trip.  You were so polite, well behaved and a pleasure to take on a school trip.  We are really looking forward to school journey now!

Victorian day out

Today we had a fabulous day out at Gunpowder Mills. The children all looked the part which we think made all the difference to getting into role.
The morning was in two parts: a workshop about Victorian holidays and seasides plus learning about Victorians toys. The children participated actively and everyone (including the adults) learnt a huge amount about this very exciting era.
Fortunately the sun was out for us at lunchtime so we were able to let off steam, create new games (without a football, we used a pig's liver instead) and have some fun their grounds. It was quite amusing to see children running around holding firmly onto their cloth hats!

In the afternoon we had the experience of life in a workhouse. The children were asked to do very repetitive jobs like counting matches into a box, shoe shining and washing clothes on a proper washboard.
Our last workshop was an experience in a Victorian schoolroom. We wrote on slate boards, learnt about discipline(some children even wore a dunce hat), recited tables and chanted the very important class rules.

A wonderful experience.
